Max Humphrey x Flaneur for LCDQ Legends 2019

Max Humphrey x Flaneur for LCDQ Legends 2019
05 May 2019

Inspired by architect Luis Barragan, Interior Designer Max Humphrey collaborated with Flaneur to create an installation at Tufenkian Artisan Carpets for the LCDQ Legends 2019 – Window Designers and their Design Icons event at the Annual Design Fest in Los Angeles this week.

The design world is gathering in Los Angeles this week for the La Cienega Design Quarter’s annual highly acclaimed LEGENDS event. This year’s event is themed Legendary: Icons of Design and forty internationally renowned design stars were tasked with creating homages to legendary interior designers of the past.

The participating interior designers were asked transform the windows of the 50 LCDQ shop and showroom windows to honor the Icons of Design. Designers at this year’s event include New Yorkers Alex Papachristidis, Penny Drue Baird, Neal Beckstedt, Sasha Bikoff and Nicole Fuller; Emily Summers from Dallas; Tom Stringer from Chicago; Southern California designers Jeremiah Brent, and Brooke and Steve Giannetti; and Portland-based interior designer Max Humphrey, who partnered with Flaneur to create his tribute to Mexican architect Luis Barragán at the Tufenkian Artisan Carpets on La Cienega.

“I’m inspired by how Barragán was opposed to design being all about functionality and more about emotion, and how he was somehow able to make a house painted hot pink still feel serene,” says Humphrey. “I use this inspiration in my own projects because I like bright colors and big statements and I go with my gut when designing for clients. I’m allergic to all-white rooms. Barragán said a house wasn’t supposed to be a ‘cold piece of convenience.’ Most people might not think they could live in a pink and yellow room but hopefully this [installation] will inspire them to get more comfortable using color.”

Using Flaneur’s custom dyed bedding in the shade Heliopolis, Humphrey says, “I picked Barragán because I was inspired by his use of color blocking and his color palette - specifically that of his own home in Mexico City where there are a lot of bold pinks and bright yellows. This was also a challenge for me because it’s not my typical style, I like color but the nature of this event is that there’s no real client so I could really do what I want and experiment.”

The largest event of its kind supported by major corporate sponsors and a dozen media partners, LEGENDS brings thousands of influencers, enthusiasts, top design editors, and purveyors of design from across the U.S. and from around the world to the LCDQ for three days of keynotes, open houses, discussions, book signings, exhibitions, social events and networking.

You can see Max Humphrey’s installation at Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, 501 N. La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA Tuesday May 7th through Thursday May 16th, 2019.
