Aesthetician Joomee Song knows a thing or two about sleep, self care and a healthy skincare routine. The Japanese born facialist has toured with Grammy and Oscar winning artist Lady Gaga since 2014, traveling all over the world with her.
This year the skincare expert opened her own studio Faceworks in Santa Monica. Here she practices her unique protocol called Kaika which combines an ancient form of Japanese deep facial massage to lift, tone, and detoxify the skin; a chiropractic Shiatsu technique that realigns facial structure; and a special form of microcurrent whereby the electric charge is delivered through her hands rather than the usual metal wands.
But there is more to maintaining good skin. Here are Song’s six tips she tells all her clients do at home. These tips include everything from picking bedding, employing color therapy and of course a proper skincare routine.
1) When buying bedding, always opt for natural fibers
Synthetic fabrics often contain plastics and other chemicals that are bad for the environment and can be absorbed by the skin. All Flaneur bedding is made from 100% USA-grown Supima® cotton which is prized for the extra-long staple fiber that gives the cotton its superior strength, softness and color retention. The cotton is farmed using state-of-the-art technology. This process ensures the best quality cotton in the world grown with as little impact on the environment as possible.
2) Wash or switch out your pillowcases every three days
Ideally, you should wash everything that touches your face on a regular basis from your pillowcases and your towels to your makeup brushes, beauty blenders and phone. You should always use a fragrance free, free and clear, delicate laundry detergent which is better for both you and your bedding.
3) Skip the pillow altogether and just sleep on a pillowcase
Sleeping completely flat without a pillow will help your back to extend and you will rest in a natural position. Using a pillow can lead to all kinds of issues like strained neck muscles, neck wrinkles and it can even decrease the blood flow to your head.
4) Choose relaxing colors for your bedroom
My bedroom is all greens and blues which promotes a peaceful sleep. Studies have shown that blue has tremendous power to manage stress. It’s a very soothing color that helps calm your mind, slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety. Blue is also believed to have a cooling and astringent effect. Green is also a restful and quiet color. Because it symbolizes nature, green can diffuse anxiety and helps us stay calm and refreshed.
5) Do not use heavy night creams and oils – especially during the hot summer months
Heat can clog pores so heavy night creams can exacerbate this problem during the warm and humid summer months. At night I use a gentle cleanser and exfoliant like a soft cloth to buff my skin before bedtime. Then, toner and a light moisturizer like Dr Barbara Sturm Face Cream Light.
6) Mornings are for stretching, breathing and meditation
I spend the first few minutes after I wake stretching, breathing and meditating. Then I cleanse my face using just cool water followed by a toner (Song uses May Lindstrom Skin The Jasmine Garden Botanical Facial Mist) and sunscreen which must be applied thirty minutes before leaving the house. That’s my skincare routine key.
